Grading Scale for 40 Questions

Percent and letter grade for every score on a 40-question test.

On a 40-question test, each question is worth 2.5 points. This chart uses a standard plus/minus scale (A- at 90%, B- at 80%, C- at 70% and D- at 60%), so "an A" here means A- or better. Students need 36 right for an A, 32 for a B, 28 for a C and 24 for a D. They can miss 4 questions and still get an A, or 8 and still get a B.

  • A36+ rightA- or better
  • B32+ rightB- or better
  • C28+ rightC- or better
  • D24+ rightD- or better

At a glance

  • Every exact grade on the scale, from A down to F with each plus and minus, has a score that earns it.
  • Of the 41 possible scores, 5 scores earn an A, 4 a B, 4 a C, 4 a D and 24 an F.
  • The lowest score that isn't an F is 24 right (60%), a D-.
  • Percentages are rounded to the nearest whole number, so 39 out of 40 shows as 98%.
